BIG CATCH FEVER (2025)
Tairyō-bata, or "big catch flags", are flags attached to fishing boats which originally signalled that a large catch of fish had been caught that day. These days, they are often displayed to symbolise prosperity and longevity in a variety of contexts.
BIG CATCH FEVER represents my multi-generational fishing family in the north of Japan, and the complex mixture of pride and shame associated with them. It uses a combination of modern and historical embroidery and printing techniques, such as silkscreen printing and hand embroidery, to create a rich and textured textile work.
